Frequently Asked Questions
Why work with a speech-language pathologist on cognition and memory?
What is the difference between dementia family coaching and therapy?
Therapy is a service that is considered to be medically necessary and oftentimes accompanied with a physicians referral and orders for treatment. Therapy services are performed by a licensed clinical therapy professional and includes standardized assessments and development of a plan of care that meets weekly. Therapy is also often reimbursable through insurance and qualifies for HSA plans.
Dementia Family Coaching services are not reimbursable through insurance and are a private pay service. Coaching is a service for caregivers and family and does not need to involve direct interaction with the individual with dementia. Coaching services also meet at whatever frequency meets your needs whether that is weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or as you need them.
Can we continue services with our therapist after we discharge from our therapy plan of care?
We offer ongoing direct support through our Wellness Plan. Unlike therapy, support through the Wellness Plan can be provided at your preferred frequency of weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, etc.
What are the benefits of in-home therapy?
In-home services offer therapy right in the comfort of your home. Therapy is provided in a familiar environment to address goals in the most functional way possible. In-home therapy also reduces the stress of having to travel to an appointment. During our sessions we also address independence and safety within the home and offer strategies for caregivers to continue supporting their loved one between sessions
How many therapy sessions will I have and how long will they last?
Each patient's diagnosis and needs are different, so together with your therapist you will develop an individualized plan of care that is right for you. Your plan of care and number of visits will be determined during your first visit and explained to you by your therapist. Typically the evaluation lasts 45-75 minutes.
Following therapy sessions are typically recommended on a weekly basis (1-3 times a week) and are typically 45 minutes. The amount of time will be based on your specific needs, and your therapist will discuss this with you. The number of weeks you will receive therapy can last anywhere from a few weeks to months depending on your individual needs and goals.
Discharge from therapy typically occurs when you have either met your goals, you have reached your maximum potential in therapy or you are satisfied with your progress and wish to discontinue.
